2020 Bridal Trends

SKYE + JAKE engagement

As we near towards the end of 2019 (Yes, really!) Our attention starts to shift towards our 2020 weddings. Whilst the dress is not the first thing to tick off your wedding planning list, careful consideration should be made towards the inspirations and style of gown you choose, as you will find this leads you towards venues, styling choices, flowers, the list goes on! Whilst at Wendy Makin our style is the modern take on classic shapes, we have rounded up our bride’s guide to 202o Wedding Dress Trends. For the most part, 2020 trends tip their hat at iconic trends from decades past, morphed into more fashion forward ideas and perfect for our contemporary brides.

Corsets

Whilst corsetry is nothing new, its never been this sophisticated! These structural masterpieces paired with loads of texture, dreamy tulles, hi lo hems and classic ball gown skirts. Think edgy-royal vibes

Turn up the Volume

There’s nothing quite like a bit of volume! What makes the trend this time is not just oodles of fabric, its choosing where it is on your gown! Oversized puffy sleeves, collar details, voluminous pleated skirts and 3D textures – all playful nods to the romanticised 80’s with absolutely zero Dynasty references!

The 70’s are back

It’s no secret that 70’s fashion is back in general as it is sweeping mainstream fashion and it has had a flow on effect into the bridal dress market. The movement channels a brides inner hippie, giving rise to the Woodstock days of flowing lace, long sleeves and fringing. On the other end of the spectrum you have all the glitz and glam of 70’s disco era, evoking Studio 54 vibes with iridescent and sparkly fabrics, plunging necklines and flared pants!!

Evolution of Boho

No longer is boho considered to be flowing fabrics and flower crowns. It has continually evolved since it became a massive bridal trend. The modern boho babe is a minimalist. She is effortless, relaxed and a risk taker all at once. There is a comfort to this bridal approach – think edgy clean lines and bridal separates.

Bridal Suiting

It has finally arrived! Be it a bridal jumpsuit or a two-piece suit, Bridal Suiting is a massive trend for 2020. No longer do you have to borrow your partners jacket at the reception – it is built into your bridal look! We love ourselves a jumpsuit (Hello our Amal Jumpsuit!) as a perfect registry look or reception outfit given you have so much more freedom for dancing! The trend extends to lace or tulle capes over plainer styles or tailoring a jacket over your bridal gown, Bridal suiting exudes cool girl vibes – especially paired with a long straight veil!

Racer Necks

Thanks to a certain Duchess and a newly crowned Mrs Beiber, high neck halters are the perfect antidote in a world of strapless and V-neck gowns. With its ability to narrow the shoulder line and elongate the body, the Racer neck style is certainly a trend worth giving a go! Find the shape in simple crepe gowns or a luxe lace style and better yet, the backs of these gowns bring that extra accent as they always add a little drama!

Neutral Tones

In truth, they never left for them to become a new trend in 2020. Neutral tones add depth to gowns if you want to highlight certain features such as lace overlays or embellishment. It’s all about finding the tone that works for you as there are 50 shades of neutral! Pinky neutrals such as a blush are a great choice as they tend to match skin tone nicely. Alternatively more golden tones like a champagne or ginger can add warmth and body to a look, especially if you like gold accents with your accessories!

Off the shoulder

Much similar to the racer neck, off the shoulder styles are a refreshing change in the bridal world! Reprising from the 80’s and early 90’s (Hey there Julia Robert’s) its classic shape has a femininity about it whilst also making a bold statement. It allows the bride to shine and let those collarbones loose! Structured off the shoulder styles with tailored collars are a very prominent as well as lace gowns with a scalloped neckline.
