“The moment I met Ash and began dealing with him, it was evident his passion for diamonds and customer service was more genuine than anywhere I had previously been.” – Chris Russell
Diamonds direct, no middleman mark-up
We’re different to other boutique jewellers; we source exceptional diamonds from international diamond cutters and import into Australia. We’re buying direct, rather than through a wholesaler, so you get the highest quality diamonds at a great price.
Because we buy the diamonds, design and make your jewellery to order, we guarantee outstanding quality and value.
“Ashley has shown respect for what I want, has advised me and helped me clarify what I need, asked lots of questions and his knowledge of the industry is exceptional… His personal approach, expertise and his willingness to go the extra mile gave me confidence that mine and my wife’s rings were in the right hands.” – Ian Edwards
Who is Ashley Portas?
Diamondport owner Ashley Portas chats about how he got into the jewellery business, and what he loves best about creating diamond engagement rings.
You were a diamond merchant for ten years – is that a business you were born into?
Not at all! Right from the beginning I was an entrepreneur. I bought a courier business when I was 19, and my main patch was Elizabeth Street Brisbane, where all the gem, gold and diamond merchants were.
I was introduced to this world that I didn’t know existed, because I was a simple kid from Ipswich.
I befriended a diamond merchant who agreed to teach me the trade. After almost four years driving I was ready for a challenge.
How did you learn the diamond wholesaling trade?
I started picking out diamond orders for jewellers – say choosing 20 or so diamonds for a wedding ring. Eventually I started quoting on bigger stones, buying stones and importing from overseas. I learnt the whole diamond business; ordering, paying the bills, grading goods, selling goods.
I ended up leaving that business; things were happening that didn’t fit my values. I followed another passion and became a personal trainer.
You were a diamond merchant for 10 years – what inspired Diamondport?
After a few months as a personal trainer I had a friend ask me to make their engagement ring, and then a few more. It inspired me to launch MAP Diamonds, my diamond wholesaling business.
Selling diamonds as a merchant just to jewellers, all you’re doing is importing and selling a commodity; there’s no love. I made engagement rings on the side for friends, and friends of friends, which I loved, and I made the conscious decision to do more of what I love.
What do you love most about your job?
My clients – I love getting to know their story, helping craft an engagement ring and proposal plans. As soon as he picks up the finished ring from my studio I’m waiting for the call or text telling me all about how she said yes.
Making engagement rings I get to see the whole happy picture, it’s a joy getting the photo from the engagement and staying in touch with clients over the years.
Have you become friends with your clients?
Yes! I’ve made friends with many clients, we keep in touch and I often end up meeting many of their friends too.
It’s difficult for small business owners to get clients to leave google reviews – what is it about you, or how you run your business, that people just love you?
(At the time of publishing, Diamondport had 139 5-star google reviews)
Because I care. A guy will tell me about his engagement plans and I get emotionally invested, I get teary about how he’s going to propose.
Later, I get him to introduce me to his fiancée, I teach her how to clean her jewellery which means she cleans it regularly and takes notice of any damage. I can fix things before anything happens.
I genuinely care, and my clients appreciate that.
What is the biggest misconception about your job?
That I’m a jeweller. I’m not; I’m a diamond merchant, and a sales consultant. I work closely with designers and jewellers to create each design and to craft the rings.
What are the biggest trends in diamond rings? Have you created anything spectacularly unusual or rare?
The latest trend would be the diamond halo setting (small diamonds around a larger diamond to create a halo), with a fine band. The most expensive and rare diamond I have ever sold was a 0.45ct Pink Diamond worth, at the time, $65k.
What does your typical day involve?
9-11am I work on marketing – writing blogs, social media, updating my website.
11am. I keep wedding dates in my calendar so I touch base with everyone on their anniversaries. I touch base with guys who’ve bought engagement rings recently to see if they’ve proposed, and whether the ring fits – sometimes we need to resize.
12 noon – I’ll often have someone in for a private consultation at lunch time – I’m in the CBD so it’s convenient for many guys. Then I’ll work on quotes, designs, liaising with my jewellers or diamond suppliers. I usually leave late in the afternoon, but I always try to leave at the same time as my wife Sarah. I really value family time, so I love to get home and walk the dog and cook together.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?
Don’t be in a rush to make money. The money will come, but you have to provide exceptional value first.
Finally, what does 2018 hold for Ashley Portas and Diamondport?
I’m going to be a dad! Sarah and I are expecting our first child which naturally we’re really excited about. Apart from that, I’m going to concentrate on giving exceptional service to my clients – Diamondport has exploded in 2017 and I still want every client to have the greatest experience possible in the future.
