Seeing Pink. The Ultimate Guide to Pink Diamonds

Pink Diamonds Halo Engagement Ring

Are you looking for something extra special, a rare find you can be assured is unique?  Coloured diamonds are rare, pink diamonds even more so.

What is a pink diamond?

Pink diamonds are not new in the diamond world, however, they are exceptionally rare, with less than 1% of all diamonds being pink, making them one of the world’s best-kept secrets. The Argyle Mine in Western Australia consistently produces these rare gems, and now accounts for approximately 80% of all the world’s pink diamonds. It takes more than a year and hundreds of hands to turn the stone from a raw Argyle pink diamond to the gem you see before you in-store.

As with all diamonds, the four C’s apply, with colour being of the utmost importance for pink diamonds. And, as with all diamonds, they can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes.

In 2002, pink diamonds had their moment in the celebrity spotlight when Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a 6.1-carat pink diamond, which helped propel these rare gems to a popularity that has continued to this day.

Who suits a pink diamond?

You might be thinking it’s kind of a wacky gem to buy your girl, but Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey both proved otherwise with their pink diamond sparklers. Pink diamonds tend to suit those with a cooler complexion as those with warmer complexions tend to have pink undertones to their skin, so think about the types of jewellery and clothing she already wears when trying to decide if a pink diamond is for her.

If your partner wears pinks, blues, yellows and aqua greens then the chances are a stunning pink diamond will suit them.

What do pink diamonds symbolise?

Pink tends to symbolise femininity, tenderness and love so it’s only natural that pink diamonds are seen as an expression of creativity and romance. Due to their rarity, they are seen as something of a mystery, and this is only amplified by the fact that no-one knows exactly how they get their pink hue!

How much will a pink diamond cost? Is it more than a regular diamond?

The short answer is yes, they will set you back more than your regular diamond. And, apart from red diamonds, high-quality pink diamonds are now considered the most expensive in the world. For example, a 0.35 carat round S12 clarity diamond will set you back around $27,000. Why might you ask? Well, Argyle pink diamonds have increased in value by approximately 20% each year over the last decade due to their rarity and popularity. The mine is also slowly running out of pink diamonds, which is only increasing their value, so if you want one, now is the time to buy.
