Diamondport Team
Take a peek into behind the scenes at Diamondport to see what our jewellers have been creating this month, and to see what’s trending in the world of fine jewellery.
This month we completed many amazing custom designed pieces, along with remodels, repairs and resizes. One of our favourites was a stunning bypass style ring featuring a marquise laboratory grown diamond.
Trend Alert: Bypass Style Rings
What’s a bypass style ring?
A bypass style ring is defined by a flowing band that curves around and hugs the centre stone from both sides, without actually joining. This romantic design represents two lives coming together.
What’s the history of the bypass ring style?
First made in the late Victorian era, these rings are timeless and continue to evolve in design even now; having resurgences in the art nouveau period with organic forms, and in the 1970s with bold, sculptural pieces.
What stones work for a bypass ring?
Bypass rings work for many different classic shapes including the ever-popular round brilliant cut, and the more elongated shapes such as the oval or marquise cut. You can also get more creative by incorporating more than one stone into the piece. Some earlier pieces even used a coloured stone and a diamond for an added point of difference.
This month we made this stunning bypass style ring in a classic flowing style. It features a 2ct marquise lab diamond in an 18ct yellow gold half round band. Our client wanted to make sure it sat nice and close to the finger, so we set it in a low, 4 claw talon setting. We loved this design so much that we’ve introduced it into our core collection (and yes, you can request a different diamond shape!)

Oval Diamonds are In
We’ve noticed that oval diamonds, both lab and natural, are proving to be super popular currently- so much so that they don’t last in our stock for long!
When did brilliant oval diamonds first make an appearance?
In the 1700s oval diamonds were first cut, but the modern oval cut we see today has only been around since the late 1950s. The brilliant oval cut was popular in early times as lapidarists were generally able to follow the shape of the rough diamond crystal, meaning there was less wastage. During this time diamonds cut in this fashion were called ‘brilliants’, and weren’t actually described by their shapes!
Why do we love oval cut diamonds so much?
Ovals have an elegant, vintage feel to them, and have the added benefit of elongating the look of the finger. They also have a larger face-up appearance compared to a round brilliant cut diamond of the same weight. The oval cut has an added bonus of no corners, so chipping or breaking of the stone is less likely.
What designs suit oval cut diamonds?
Ovals suit every style- from classic, vintage, modern or even sculptural; ovals always have a place. Our favourite designs currently are our Cyathea and our Gardenia engagement rings for their flowing upswept bands and beautiful silhouettes. If you’re after something more vintage our Caladenia is a great choice, and looks fantastic with a coloured gemstone in the centre too!
We love seeing new and old clients each month to see what new styles and designs we can come up with for you all. It’s one of our favourite parts of being part of Diamondport.
