Take a peek behind the scenes at Diamondport to see what our jewellers have been creating this month—and what’s trending in the world of fine jewellery.

With Halloween creeping closer, we’re talking coffin cut diamonds—one of the most unique and eye-catching diamond cuts we see in the workshop.

Trend Alert: Coffin Cut Diamonds

What is a coffin cut diamond?

As the name suggests, a coffin cut diamond is reminiscent of a coffin’s iconic shape. This shape lends itself to elongated vintage, art deco, and gothic designs and can be cut as a step cut or a brilliant cut depending on the level of sparkle you’re after in the finished piece.

We recently made this stunning coffin cut lab diamond ring in 18ct white gold with a split band to really lean into the unique angles and strong linear geometry of this cut. The talon style claws also add a gothic feel to the overall piece.

What other types of unique diamond cuts are there?

Thanks to the innovation of diamond cutting, there are now countless unique shapes available—and cutters continue to push boundaries. Some cutting houses even use lasers to craft diamonds into letters of the alphabet or animal silhouettes! Below are a few of our favourite fancy cuts that carry that gothic, vintage vibe:

Criss Cut Diamond:

The Criss cut diamond was first created when cutter Christopher Slowinski made a mistake while attempting an emerald cut. Rather than waste precious material, he refined the design and produced this cushion-like shape with intersecting back facets. Many modified cuts with similar “scissor” style pavilion facets have followed.

Cadillac Cut Diamond

The Cadillac cut diamond is a perfect choice for side stones on Art Deco–inspired rings. Its name comes from its resemblance to the Cadillac car logo. It was first designed in the 1970s by Henry Grossbard and remains a striking, angular choice for side stones in trilogy style rings.

Kite Cut Diamond

Kite cut diamonds emerged in the art deco period and have been popular since with clients who connect with sleek and modern designs. It is characterised by its pointed corners, elongated silhouette and the step cuts on the pavillion facets. This cut also look fantastic in stones such as green Australian sapphires. Pictured above is a kite shape which is leaning towards and shield cut- another diamond cut that is inspired by the harsh lines of the 1920s.

A Look at Salt and Pepper Diamonds

Salt and pepper diamonds are nothing to sneeze at! Each salt and pepper diamond is totally unique, and they lend themselves to bold, edgy designs.

What is a salt and pepper diamond?

A salt and pepper diamond is a name given to a diamond with many black and white mineral inclusions in the stone, giving it an appearance as though salt and pepper had been sprinkled into it while growing. These inclusions make every single salt and pepper diamond unique and full of character.

A stunning take on our Jacaranda ring

We were so excited to bring this engagement ring to life. It features a moody salt and pepper coffin cut diamond as its centerpiece. We took elements from our Jacaranda band, and set it all in rose gold to really help the salt and pepper diamond pop.

If you’d like an edgy engagement or dress ring, or have been eyeing off a salt and pepper diamond we’d love to hear from you to come up with your dream ring!
