Aquamarine Engagement Rings- The Ocean On Your Finger

aquamarine engagement ring

We all know that March babies are lucky enough to have aquamarine as their birthstone, but you don’t have to share your day with St Paddy to wear this gorgeous gem. After all, who wouldn’t want a gem that brings tropical lagoons and calm waters to mind?!

What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine means “water of the sea” and originated in the 17th Century. These stunning stones are part of the beryl family of minerals, which also includes emeralds. Aquamarines come in colours ranging from the palest blue to dark blue-greens. They also tend to have excellent clarity and can be found in quite large sizes, which makes them a perfect centrepiece for both engagement rings and fine jewellery, and whilst we love it in any setting, we think it looks especially outstanding when paired with rose or white gold.

Where can you find Aquamarines?

Aquamarines are mined in Brazil, throughout Africa and Asia, and in Colorado, where it is the state gemstone. Although aquamarines and blue topaz can be mistaken for each other, aquamarine is far more valuable due to its rarity and natural colouring. Legend has it that aquamarines provide both mental clarity and good health and that it also protects the wearer against foes in battle or litigation. Aquamarine used to be referred to as the “Sailor’s Stone,” because ancient sailors believed that the stone would protect them from disasters at sea.

Aquamarine gems can be used for engagement rings, diamond rings and most other jewellery options.

Who loves them?

Aquamarines are popular around the world, and have some huge fans, including royalty! Queen Elizabeth II owns some of the largest aquamarines in the world, including a stunning aquamarine necklace and earrings that was presented to her by the President of Brazil at her coronation in 1953. She loved them so much, she has now added a bracelet, brooch and tiara to her collection.

Diana, Princess of Wales was also a huge fan, and her large aquamarine ring was given by Prince Harry to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex as a wedding gift. Jessica Biel also has two aquamarine stones in the eye-popping diamond engagement ring given to her by husband, Justin Timberlake.

What does an Aquamarine ring cost?

Since aquamarines are available in large sizes, there’s no incremental increase in value per carat for large gems. This is great news for you and makes aquamarine engagement rings a very affordable ring. For a 1ct aquamarine engagement ring in a platinum setting, you can expect to part with around $5,000 as opposed to $27,000 for a 0.35-carat pink diamond.
