5 Sydney Proposal Ideas From An Expert In The Know

I recently jetted down to the Sydney International Jewellery Fair. What better excuse to turn a work trip into a romantic Sydney getaway with my gorgeous wife Sarah! We had an awesome time exploring Vaucluse, Watsons Bay and Bondi, and we came up with a great list of the five most romantic Sydney proposal ideas.

Spicers Potts Point was our perfect little oasis – a glamorous base beautifully located in the leafy streets of Potts Point, between the city and prestigious eastern beach suburbs.

So whether you’re in town for a weekender with your bestie, on a babymoon or about to pop the question on a Sydney Harbour cruise – keep reading for our guide to Sydney’s proposal locations and romantic hotspots.

Spicers Potts Point: service and location on point

I’m hooked on Spicers hotels and everything they stand for; they have a flair for making your stay extra special. Spicers Potts Point opened just two months ago; it’s a row of terrace houses converted into a boutique hotel. The designers have succeeded in creating a hotel that feels like home, in a remarkable part of Sydney.

They knew us by name on arrival and manager Wendy showed us how everything worked in our room – the coffee machine, music system and other gadgets.

Checking in at the ‘reception’ feels more like a friend’s kitchen bench; pull up a stool as there’s an impressive array of quality spirits and wine on display, and complimentary canapes and cocktails every evening. Testament to their efficiency, they’d remembered that we’re vegan and upon checking into our room, they had vegan cookies prepared. They also especially prepared vegan canapes that evening.

Spicers Potts Point is the perfect base if you’re visiting Sydney to get engaged, or even if you live in Sydney and you need a staycation. Potts Point is a lovely suburb and we especially love that it’s so different to Brisbane. The streets are lined with leafy trees and terrace houses, and it’s so near the city yet so quiet.

We spent an afternoon relaxing in our room. The bed was plush and comfortable, and the suite was modern with lovely furnishings. While they don’t have the facilities of a large hotel, you have free use of a nearby gym.

Sarah took a free yoga class while I watched the fight between Mayweather vs McGregor (you know the one) at the Bourbon Bar a few streets away. We also visited acclaimed vegetarian restaurant Yellow for a 5-course degustation, which we’d highly recommend.

Reason for the trip: Sydney’s International Jewellery Fair

Being a boutique diamond merchant, the annual jewellery fair is an awesome opportunity to catch up with industry colleagues from across Australia and strengthen those relationships.

This year I learned all about the latest developments in CAD 3D printers which we use in designing your engagement ring – imagine designing your ring then getting a perfectly proportioned model to approve? I also learned about Podium, a customer interaction platform that would help automate asking for reviews.

I also caught up with the guys at Q Report Jewellery Insurance, who provide insurance for our diamond engagement rings, and key contacts from the diamond industry from Australia, India and Hong Kong.

Exploring Vaucluse and Sydney’s leafy Eastern suburbs

My Sydney trips usually centre around Darling Harbour and the CBD – if your experiences have been the same, you’ve got to check out the bays from Potts Point through to Vaucluse.

This is a seriously lovely part of Sydney – small, scenic bays with million-dollar views of the Sydney Harbour. Our friend Rami who grew up in Vaucluse took us for a walk from the Hermit Point, around Hermit Bay past Strickland House and around Steel point and onto Vaucluse Bay. We then drove down to Parsley Bay Beach to check it out briefly (which only locals would know about) then out to Camp Cove.  From there we walked out to via Lady Bay Beach for an incredible view looking back towards the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and then onto the South Head to check out the cliffs, Hornby Lighthouse.

If we weren’t already married, I would have proposed to Sarah here!

5 stunning places to propose in Sydney

  • Take a bushwalk around Hermit Bay, it’s on the bay side of Vaucluse. It’s the perfect place to propose with a different view of Sydney city.
  • Mrs Macquarie’s Chair – Mr Macquarie carved the limestone to create a place for his wife to watch ships sail in – what a romantic gesture

  • The headland of Hornby Lighthouse – with the open ocean behind you

Royal Botanic Gardens – shaped in a natural amphitheatre around the ‘stage’ of Farm Cove, take a wander and choose your spot by the lake or cove.Syd botanial gardne

  • Arthur McElhone Reserve – a pristine, little-known garden in Potts Point, with a great view of the harbour.

Where did you pop the question? Do you have any other romantic places I can add to the list?
