The latest jewellery trends for 2018 is proving this year is a year for cuts and colours with a sneaky twist headed our way as we head into the home stretch of 2018.
When it comes to jewellery trends in Australia I’m literally ahead of the game. Diamondport custom designs and makes engagement rings for it’s Brisbane clients every day. My customers aren’t limited to the choices they see in front of them as is the case in many retail jewellery stores. Trends are not forced upon them by having to choose from the available rings in a cabinet. The options are limitless. Many Aussie couples I see at Diamondport choose to design their very own custom engagement ring.
From this limitless list of possibilities, trends emerge.
Diamondport’s Round Up of 2018 Jewellery Trends7. Halo Engagement rings – The ultimate value for money
Following on from 2017, halo engagement rings have continued in 2018 and consistently represent some of the best value for money ensuring you’ll get bang for your buck when purchasing an engagement ring. Although, just a little note I’m seeing the trend moving away from this style of ring in the second half of this year which is why it comes in at number 7. More on that later.
6. Old is New Again – 3 Stone Rings
Prince Harry marrying Meghan has seen a noticeable increase in requests for 3 stone rings. Who wouldn’t want to emulate the world’s newest Duchess?
Classic trilogy rings have always been a mainstay on the engagement ring scene with a smaller portion of the market. Originally made popular by Tiffany’s & Co, the 3 stone ring combo has seen increased popularity this year and we might have Prince Harry to thank.
If your lady is all about sparkle then you can’t go past a 3 stone ring, her finger will literally be filled with diamonds.
5. Morganite Engagement Rings Rocketed to Number 5
The new player in the Australian market Morganite’s popularity has accelerated in 2018. A newcomer in terms of trends, Morganite has been around for more than 100 years.
Morganite is a stunning blush colour and won’t dent your wallet if your priority is to travel or buy a house. At $300 per carat Morganite comes in number one for affordability.
If you’re already engaged or married Morganite dress rings are a must have and their price point makes getting a ‘yes’ from your other half super easy.

4. Black Diamonds – When Making a Statement is an Understatement
New to the scene, black diamond engagement rings popped up earlier in the year and increased in popularity. Black diamonds are for the girl or guy who really wants to set themselves apart. Perfect for contemporary couples wanting to make a statement.
3. Sapphire Engagement Rings are Ever Popular
Again, thanks to a few famous royals we know, Sapphires come in at number 3 in 2018 hottest trending engagement rings in Australia. Princess Diana’s stunning sapphire ring with a halo of diamonds leads the way in popularity stakes when it comes to sapphire engagement rings.
Like a few of the other styles making the top trends in jewellery list for 2018, sapphires offer more affordability than their diamond cousins. Which as we all know means you can easily go bigger, who said anything about saving the dosh.
2. Pear Shaped Diamond Engagement Rings – My Personal Favourite
Pear-shaped diamond rings were popular in 2017 and that popularity hasn’t slowed down in 2018.
If you do the maths pear-shaped diamond engagement rings are up to 25% cheaper than traditional brilliant round diamonds making them a stunning yet economical option.
Pear-shaped diamond engagement rings are perfect for the woman who wants to stand out from the crowd, has her own sense of unique style and individual character. She definitely lives to the beat of her own drum.
Consider adding a halo of smaller brilliant-cut round diamonds and wow, you’ll have a statement ring for sure.
1. Simplicity with a Focus on Diamonds – THE SOLITAIRE
And as we leap head first into the second half of the year off, we appear to be coming full circle. Guys are asking, which means girls are hinting that classic, timeless and simplicity with a focus on diamonds is the best. Diamond solitaires are timeless, at times they may not be at the height of their popularity but there wouldn’t be a year where they didn’t make the top 10.
So it does not matter the shape, brilliant round, princess cut, oval or something entirely different, you can’t go wrong with a solitaire.
While there are trends and it’s important you know your halos from your solitaires and your pear-shaped from your oval-shaped diamonds, the most important thing is what you and your partner love. No trend should pressure or influence your decision. Know the pros and cons of each style, consider your lifestyle, personality, style and budget, then go with your heart and you can’t go wrong.
